Kites Day 14th September 2008

Kites Day - Rockingham CastleThe spectacular back drop of the Castle sets the scene for one of the traditional events of the summer season at Rockingham Castle. With the stunning view over the valley below visitors have the opportunity to fly their kites over the ramparts.

The White Horse Kite Flyers Club will be flying their fantastic range of spectacular and unusual kites over the turrets of the Castle. Unusually there will be the opportunity for your favourite teddy bear to take a parachute jump, bring him and her along for the thrill of a teddy’s life. Free entry to the grounds is provided for all children that bring their own kite. No kite? Never fear there will be the chance to make one in the kite making workshop.

The Castle owner, James Saunders Watson said “Kite flying is such a wonderful activity for family and friends to enjoy together. The flying demonstrations are wonderful with vast kites in various shapes and sizes swooping over the Castles roof tops, a sight not to be missed”.

Why Join The Queue When You Can Lead It?

The rental market in designer handbags rocketed following the success of the recent Sex and The City movie but now a new website is offering a way for handbag lovers to beat the rental queues.

Fashionistas everywhere started hiring handbags after watching the movie, which features a character who rents several designer bags. But many bargain hunters found they faced long waiting lists before they could get their hands on the bag of their dreams.

Now Bagnificent.co.uk is offering a new alternative. The site allows shoppers to buy the latest designer bags and sell them again when they become bored. Because the site’s prices are a fraction of those in shops buying and then selling your bag through the site can actually be cheaper than renting – and it takes away the headache of having to wait.

Bag rental sites offer customers the chance to hire a designer bag for around £165 a month instead of paying the huge price tag for a new bag. But the rush to rent the latest must-have bag has led to waiting lists for many as fashion followers hurry to make the most of the service. Now help is at hand at www.bagnificent.co.uk where shoppers can bag themselves a bargain of their own without having to rent.

The site has now launched Loved, its range of preowned handbags which it is selling along with its existing range of imported designer handbags. The range has quickly proven a hit with buyers looking for exclusive designer bags at affordable prices.

Bagnificent.co.uk founder, Glasgow-based businesswoman Gerry Campbell, said she had launched the Loved range after inquires from customers.

She said: “We launched the Loved range and haven’t looked back since. A few customers have mentioned cash being a little tight and I think with the current economic outlook shoppers are generally looking for a good deal.

“With a pre-owned bag the customer gets to own something expensive and exclusive but at a fraction of the price they would pay if it were a new purchase from shops.”

Shoppers can save hundreds with some of the great deals available including Christian Dior tan patent leather bag for £235 instead of £900 originally or the Louis Vuitton Black Epi Bag which costs £600 in the shops but can be picked up on the site for just £195. There are many more bargains to be had at www.bagnificent.co.uk.

Lustre’s On: Date For Annual Premier Craft Makers’ Market Announced

A UNIQUE opportunity to browse and buy the work of the country’s most exciting contemporary craft designers has been unveiled this autumn.

Lustre will take place on Saturday 8 and Sunday 9 November at Lakeside, the University of Nottingham’s public arts facility based in the picturesque surroundings of Highfields Park and its boating lake. It will offer a unique chance to meet the makers, browse the exhibits and buy their work.

Now in its ninth year, Lustre is one of the largest and most sophisticated events of its kind, attracting over 4,000 visitors in 2007.

Lustre Annual Premier Craft Makers

With its recent expansion into the stylish Djanogly Art Gallery, Lustre 2008 is set to be bigger and better. It’s already on the map as one of the UK’s leading craft retail showcases, and people flock to Nottingham from all over the country to it.

Featuring top quality work by 55 UK designers, this is a key diary date for anyone interested in discovering original pieces of jewellery, textiles, ceramics, glass, wood, leather, furniture and metalwork. It’s the perfect purchasing opportunity for festive shoppers and serious collectors alike.

Lustre’s designers’ backgrounds are as diverse as their art. In previous years they’ve included Nottingham’s Donya Cowardd, whose witty fabric dog portraits now sell in the stores of the city’s fashion legend Paul Smith; and traditional book-binder Katherine O’Connell, whose gorgeous notebooks use 100% recycled paper from an English mill. And this year sees the debut of cabinet maker Steve Handley, who makes cupboards from reclaimed timber pieces and old kitchen utensils.

Lustre Annual Premier Craft MakersYoung Meteors showcases stunning creations by the best of the emerging graduate talent from universities in the East Midlands – and offers a chance to own an original piece by one of tomorrow’s big names.

This year’s event is, as usual, expected to attract people from all over the country, tourists and national journalists. A special preview and VIP night will be held on 7 November.

Shona Powell, director at Lakeside, said: “Lustre has become a nationally renowned and eagerly anticipated event in the national crafts calendar.  Over 4,000 people attended last year, and in 2008 we promise another opportunity to discover a wealth of original design from talented makers across the United Kingdom.  We firmly believe that you’ll find something that you like, need, or would really love to give, and look forward to welcoming you to Lakeside this November.”

Remember, Remember Your Pets This November!

Remember, Remember Your Pets This NovemberBonfire Night may go with a bang for you and your family, but it is estimated that approximately 60 per cent of pets become stressed and fearful during the firework season.  To make matters worse, not only are many pet owners unaware how to help their dogs and cats with firework fears, veterinary professionals believe 71 per cent of owners are unable to spot the signs that their pets are unhappy.

With this in mind, CEVA Animal Health has joined forces with PDSA, Feline Advisory Bureau (FAB) and the Association of Pet Behaviour Counsellors (APBC) to produce ten top tips to help your pets cope with the firework season:

Hints And Tips On How To Prepare Your Pet For Bonfire Night!

1. Allow your dog or cat to retreat to its favourite hideaway.  This bolthole is where they feel safe.  You can further increase this feeling of security and wellbeing by plugging in a D.A.P.® or Feliway® Diffuser

2. On the evenings you expect fireworks, ensure your pet is safely inside and secure doors, windows and cat flaps

3. Make sure your dog or cat is microchipped.  If they do escape, frightened, confused animals can easily get lost

4. In the run up to the firework season, ensure dogs are used to being taken for walks early in the evening and cats are provided with litter trays both before and during the firework season

5. Draw curtains to reduce the noise from outside and play music or have the TV on to help mask the noise of fireworks

6. Ignore any fearful behaviour and do not try to comfort your pet.  A dog may pick up on your anxiety and this can make the problem worse.  Cats prefer to be left to cope on their own

7. Do not punish your pet.  This only confirms that there is something to be afraid of

8. Try not to go out while the fireworks are going off.  Seeing you acting normally will help your pets feel more settled

9. Speak to your vet. D.A.P.® Spray can be used to give dogs additional support on the night of the event

10. If you are worried that your pet is taking a long time to recover from the firework festivities, speak to your vet.

Fish Oil Slashes Need For Dangerous Painkillers

Relief from rheumatoid arthritis with no harmful side effects. New trials show Cod Liver Oil can reduce the need for anti-inflammatory drugs without loss of pain-relief

The results of a five-year study show that Cod Liver Oil can reduce the amount of anti-inflammatory drugs taken by Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) patients by over 30%. Anti-inflammatory drugs, such as Ibuprofen and Aspirin, are heavily prescribed to relieve pain for those with Rheumatoid Arthritis. However, fears are growing among consumers about the dangers of long-term use, with reported side-effects including stomach bleeding, high blood pressure and an increased risk of heart attacks.

The study was conducted by investigators from Rheumatology units at Dundee and Edinburgh Universities. RA patients were recruited over a 5 year period and randomly assigned to two treatment groups: Seven Seas Cod Liver Oil 10g/day, or a control group provided with a dummy pill. Results showed that by taking Cod Liver Oil daily, nearly 40% of patients were able to reduce their anti-inflammatory intake by over 30%. Most importantly, this study showed that the reduction in intake of anti-inflammatory drugs in those taking the Cod Liver Oil supplements was not associated with any worsening of pain or disease activity. Cod Liver Oil is one of nature’s richest sources of Omega-3 essential fatty acids.

May The Force Be With You

The MoonIt seems that more gardeners today are turning to the moon for advice on the best time to plant, prune, weed, and harvest. The practice, known as moon or lunar gardening, is cultivating a quite a following. This method of gardening has been practiced by many for hundreds of years, and is a perfect compliment to organic gardening because it is more effective in non-chemically treated soil.

It is believed that the technique of gardening by the phases of the moon can speed the germination of your seeds by working with the forces of nature.

Plants respond to the same gravitational pull of tides that affect our oceans. The moon also influences the groundwater tables beneath our feet, which alternately stimulates root and leaf growth. Seeds sprout more quickly, plants grow vigorously and at an optimum rate, harvests are larger and they don’t go to seed as quickly.

At the phase of the new moon, the lunar gravity pulls water up, and causes the seeds to swell and burst. This factor, coupled with the increasing moonlight, creates balanced root and leaf growth. This is the best time for planting above ground annual crops that produce their seeds outside the fruit. Examples are lettuce, spinach, celery, broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, and grain crops. Cucumbers like this phase also, even though they are an exception to that rule.

PlantsIn the moon’s second quarter the gravitational pull is less, however, the moonlight is strong, this creates strong leaf growth. This is on the whole a good time for planting, especially two days before the full moon. The types of crops that prefer the second quarter are annuals that produce above ground, but their seeds form inside the fruit, such as beans, melons, peas, peppers, squash, and tomatoes. Mow lawns in the first or second quarter to increase growth.

The energy is drawing down as the moon wanes after the full moon. During this phase more moisture is created in the soil as the gravitational pull is high, but the moonlight is decreasing, putting energy into the roots. This is a favourable time for planting root crops, including beets, carrots, onions, potatoes and peanuts. It is also good for perennials, biennials, bulbs and transplanting because of the active root growth. Pruning is best done in the third quarter, in the sign of Scorpio.

The fourth quarter is considered a resting period as there is decreased gravitational pull and moonlight. This is also the best time to cultivate, harvest, transplant and prune. Mow lawns in the third or fourth quarter to retard growth.

Personally, I have no idea whether this method works or not, but it may be worth experimentation. Unfortunately, at the time of writing, spring planting here in Kefalonia, is well on the way. However, in February/March next year it may be worth a try. I tend to follow the gardeners and farmers in the surrounding fields. I was even reprimanded last year for putting in my onions 2 weeks late.

All I can say is that there was a flurry of potato planting on 14th and 15th February this year so who knows!!

Leicester High School Skis To Success

Having overcome a challenging start – when a 39-seater coach turned up to transport 57 people to Manchester Airport for the flight to Turin - a week of near perfect skiing was enjoyed by the students and staff of Leicester High School in Le Corbier in the French Alps over the Easter Holidays this April 2008. Nurse Emmerson proved a huge asset in dealing with the inevitable break, bumps and bruises! But everyone made great progress carving through the powder like quite experienced skiers by the end of the week through the excellent tuition given by ESF – the French Ski School. The trip took in not just skiing in brilliant sunshine, but also a town trail, a pizza evening, swimming in an outdoor pool – heated to 30C- surrounded by banks of snow, a disco and a trip by skiddoes to a mountain restaurant for traditional French mountain food followed by a torch-lit descent.

Leicester High School Skis To Success

Emma Formoy of Year 10 won the week’s Slalom Race defeating representatives from other schools, as well as Mrs Formoy of the Modern Languages Department and Mrs Davison of the PE Department. A healthy family rivalry now exists to reverse the placings on the next trip in Easter 2010. All the girls made use of the opportunities to practise their French by becoming regular customers of the village’s creperie and hot chocolate cafes!
