Keepsake portraits with a difference

The launch of a new portrait company with a difference could solve the age old problem of buying that special someone a personal present they will treasure for ever. The Alternative Portrait Company is the creative brainchild of local Leicestershire artist Sarah Boddy. Already established as a successful greeting card designer she has turned her talent to painting fun portraits that celebrate the lives, loves and quirks of her commissioning clients. From birth announcements to retirements her humorous watercolour designs capture the person, the place and the occasion with meticulous personal detail. Whether the subject is a family group, couple or individual her unique designs become treasured keepsakes.

Based on each client brief Sarah Boddy produces a sketch. Once approved by the client she paints it in vivid watercolours, a process that can take anything from two to five days depending on the detail involved. The picture is then mounted on a special cream mount board that can accompany the painting to that special occasion where guests can sign it prior to framing. The same picture can be reproduced on to invitation, thank you, moving house, birth announcement, christening or even Christmas cards.

As Sarah Boddy explained: “Some time ago I painted an alternative portrait of my own family and assortment of animals. Friends saw it and before I knew what was happening I was getting commissions. People love the informal sense of fun the paintings capture where everyone and everything on it matters from Great Auntie Maude to Cyril the chicken.” She added: “I love translating the client’s brief into the portrait and handing the finished painting over is always a pleasure for everyone concerned.” The price of a standard portrait is £95.

Sarah Boddy enjoyed a successful career in ladies fashion design before becoming a full-time artist. In 1995 she launched her successful ‘Skinny Card Company’ which is currently being sold by the greeting card group Russ Berrie UK Limited. She lives in Leicestershire with her husband, three children and menagerie of dogs, chickens and horses.
