The closure of The Magistrates’ Court Melton Mowbray was attended by many dignitaries, including Lord Lieutenant of Rutland Dr Laurence Howard and Oakham Mayor Joyce Lucas, to celebrate the building, which opened in 1878, and to mark its final closure.

Criminal cases will now go to Loughborough, with civil court matters going to Leicester.

Maggie Wilson JP, chairman of the Melton, Belvoir and Rutland bench of magistrates, said: “It’s a sad day but at the same time we have to put that behind us and look forward.”
