Multum in parvoor 'Much in Little'
Nestled in the heart of the Rutland countryside Sarah Stillman and her family live in the village of Thorpe by Water with stunning views overlooking the Welland Valley.
Before she was married, Sarah was a well known textile designer, designing fabrics and wallpaper. She owned a shop called Cloud Nine in Hertfordshire, where she sold fashion garments and she introduced an exclusive range of hand painted T-shirts, which were much sought after.
After setting up a family home in Rutland, working in her husbands Print and Packaging business, and having three children, Emily, Samuel and Caroline, Sarah was diagnosed with Marfan Syndrome in 2004.
As well as this being a big family shock it was highlighted that Marfan Syndrome was a heredity gene which was passed on to her son Samuel and daughter Caroline. Luckily Sarah’s eldest daughter Emily didn’t have it.
Following a year of coming to terms with the condition, and finding out new methods of surgery Sarah, 49 and her son Sam, 19 underwent open heart surgery in the same week.
However, it was during a period of convalescence that resulted in her going in a new artistic direction.
Sarah who is not one to sit around doing nothing decided to use her talents in order to develop “The Sarah Stillman Design Collection.”
She has always been a successful Rutland artist and throughout the years has produced many pieces of artwork, and is part of the Rutland Open Studios, where she exhibits her work regularly.
Sarah decided to put her vibrant artwork on to greetings cards. This produced such a favourable reaction amongst family and friends that she decided to go on and produce a complete Kitchen and Giftware Range.
Sarah found inspiration from her love of gardening, nature and plants in particular.
Some of the products in her range are quite unusual such as the mini chopping boards for garlic and lemon and her round glass platters.
All products are named after her special friends and Family, who helped her through difficult times.
Sarah has built up a collection of giftware products all displaying her floral designs. These include the melamine range of table mats, coasters, cheese chopping boards and mini chopping boards for garlic and lemon.
The Glass range includes worktop saver/cheese boards, round glass platters and glass wall clocks.
There are also Greeting Cards and Giclee Prints.
There are many more products in the pipeline such as cushions, deck chairs, mugs, oven gloves, tea-towels and more.
In addition, Sarah is redesigning her house, in order to accommodate a Gallery, and will be holding various Classes during the year, includingArt, Yoga, Meditation and Poetry Reading.
Every year in August Sarah holds a watercolour day, hosted by a top local artist.
