District Councillor awarded top honor in Queen’s birthday list
North West Leicestershire District Councillor and local businesswoman, Alison Smith, has been recognised in the Queen’s Birthday Honours list with an MBE for services to Sewing and Corsetry and to the community of North West Leicestershire.
The Queen's Birthday Honours List recognises outstanding achievement and service across the whole of the UK. Many awards go to people who have made a real difference to life in their communities.
On hearing about her award, Councillor Smith said: “It’s a great honour to be recognised in this way. I’m humbled by it and it’s lovely to think that people thought enough of my commitment to the District and my profession to nominate me.”
Congratulating Councillor Smith on her MBE, Leader of North West Leicestershire District Council, Councillor Richard Blunt said: “It’s fantastic news that Councillor Smith has been awarded an MBE. Over the years she has shown enormous dedication in serving the community of North West Leicestershire and is an extremely talented and admired businesswoman This is truly well deserved and, on behalf of the Council, I would like offer our congratulations.”
Councillor Smith has been a District Councillor in North West Leicestershire for 10 years, has served as Chairman and Deputy Chairman of the District Council and, is currently the Deputy Leader and portfolio holder for Community Services.
Leader of the Labour Group, Councillor Leon Spence said: "On behalf of the Labour Group we would like to offer our congratulations to Councillor Smith. We are pleased that her service to the business community and the District of North West Leicestershire over many years has been recognised."
Councillor Smith is the UK’s premier teacher of dressmaking, tailoring and corsetry skills. She is the author of a number of books including her bestselling book – The Sewing Book which has sold over 250,000 copies.
Councillor smith participates at many sewing shows around the country, writes magazine articles and has participated in TV programmes.
