Donation kits out Uppingham Jazz & Soul Band for its busiest summer
A generous donation from Robert Wills, chairman of the Falcon Hotel in Uppingham, has equipped the Uppingham Jazz & Soul Band with essential equipment for its busiest summer season to date.
The UJ&SB band of Rutland players aged from 15 to 72 has already put the £350 audio equipment to good use, raising more than £500 for East Anglia Children's Hospices at a packed concert at St John’s Church in Peterborough.
UJ&SB’s also played a double header on Sunday at the Uppingham Feast and a charity party in Ridlington. That followed last week’s performance at Leighfield Primary School and a sold-out concert at Manton’s Village Hall in May.
UJSB leader Tony Gray said: “It was fantastic of Robert Wills to pay for the equipment, which will enable us to play in a wider variety of venues, which already include Robert’s Falcon Hotel.
“Robert has been very generous both with money and with his encouragement for the band, which is entirely composed of volunteers who simply enjoy playing together and entertaining our audiences.”
Robert Wills said: “I’m very happy to support the UJ&SB who do a great job playing in our community and encouraging youngsters to enjoy their music. The band have been very supportive of Uppingham’s regular Late Night Shopping and other events through the year, like last summer’s Olympic Torch Relay. So I thought it was time to thank them by helping them buy this new equipment.”
Tony Gray said: “Our thanks also go to Danny Hern at Rocky Road Music in Corby, who has also been very helpful in supplying equipment at a cut price.
“And we continue to be grateful to Uppingham Community College, which not only provides us with a place to rehearse but also with lots of help in many ways. Some of the band’s younger musicians are UCC students, as are teachers past and present.”
Further ahead, the band will play in September at the Anglian Water family Rutland Day and its annual gigs at Robert Wills’ Falcon Hotel in Uppingham on December 5th and 21st.
