Tottering By Gently: The First 20 Years

Tottering By Gently: The First 20 YearsThis month sees the 20th anniversary of the first publication in Country Life magazine of the best-selling weekly cartoon strip of Tottering-by-Gently.

Annie Tempest is the 2009 winner of the Cartoon Art Trust's prestigious Pont Prize for the Portrayal of the British Character

Since 1994, Dicky and Daffy and the whole cast of characters from the Tottering-by-Gently cartoons have become familiar and much-loved to a dedicated international fan base. To celebrate their special anniversary, The First 20 Years includes insights into your favourite characters and who inspired them; a peek behind the scenes at Tottering Hall with its hip baths, leaky roofs, vast rooms and anti-freeze in the loos; plus a multitude of themed cartoons, including: Christmas, Guests, Friends & Neighbours, Ageing, Never to Old to and much more.

Annie Tempest is often inspired by things she hears, but it is her knack of seeing the humour in everyday situations, familiar to everyone wherever they live, that makes her work so appealing. As her business partner Raymond O’Shea comments: “Annie laughs with people but never at them. It is good, clean, honest observational humour.”

Over the past twenty years Annie has worked for all the major national newspapers and life-style magazines and has had numerous collections of her work published. In 2009 the Cartoon Art Trust awarded her the Pont Prize for the Portrayal of the

British Character. She has had eighteen one-woman shows in the UK and overseas. Annie created the 'Westenders' strip for the Daily Express in the 1980s, the 'Yuppies' strip for the Daily Mail during the late '80s and early 90s. Since the 1993 'Tottering-by-Gently' has appeared weekly in Country Life magazine. Annie lives in Stibbard, Norfolk. She recently discovered that she was not the only cartoonist in the family. While looking through the family scrapbooks in the library of Broughton Hall (her family home) she found her great-grandmother Eleanor Blanche Tempest had been a prolific cartoonist depicting very similar subjects to those Annie likes to draw (see page 9).

Annie Tempest and Raymond O’Shea have successfully built up the Tottering-by-Gently brand to be an international success, with new fans now coming from Russia, China and the Far East. Tottering now has a permanent presence in Boodles, Brooks’s, Pratt’s and White’s and The Sloane Club to name just a few in London, and numerous clubs in Australia, the USA and the Muthaiga Club in Nairobi, Kenya.
