Spire Leicester Hospital is proud to mark the 25th anniversary of its opening
Wind back the clock 25 years to September 1989; it was a big day for all the staff when Spire Leicester Hospital (then Bupa Hospital Leicester) opened its hospital in Oadby to treat their first patients.
Treating patients at the Hospital since day one, Consultant Ophthalmologist Mr Ray Chaudhuri has witnessed first-hand the changes and improvements the hospital has made to keep up with the advances in ophthalmic surgery over the years. Mr Chaudhuri said:
“I have been extremely privileged to have worked in the hospital from the very first day we opened. It is true to say that 25 years ago cataract surgery was very basic; phacoemulsification surgery was not available, we used to carry out cataract surgery with lots of stitches on the cornea and local anaesthetic was injected with a large needle. Today, patients are treated and discharged on the same day and we use a blunt canula to infiltrate local anaesthetic around the eye. We are able to offer sophisticated assessment procedures and use highly advanced surgical microscopes to give patients near perfect vision. In addition, we now offer premium lens implants which correct astigmatism, and multifocal implants which correct reading vision, something that simply wasn’t possible 25 years ago.‘’
Over the 25 years, other things have moved on, including a change in ownership with Spire Healthcare taking over the Hospital in 2007. Throughout that time, the hospital has offered a comprehensive range of care for both adults and children and has carried out more than 225,000 operations in theatre and seen more than 1.8 million out-patient attendances, plus pathology tests, x- rays, MRI and CT scans.
Douglas Pattisson, Hospital Director, Spire Leicester Hospital said;
“The hospital is a special place and very well equipped to offer the best experience for our patients. We continue to invest both in the infrastructure of the hospital and in our teams. Our doctors and nurses and all our staff are passionate about what they do. Caring for each individual patient is at the heart of our business and we pride ourselves on providing the very highest standards of care”.
