George’s Hairdressing rally to make it a merry little Christmas for all in the community

Despite it being a busy weekend in the salon in the run-up to Christmas, Leicester’s premier salon group, George’s Hairdressing opened up their doors on Sunday 30th November to host a charity event with a difference.

Upon hearing about all of the great work that Leicester Link do in the local community, hairdressers with hearts, salon director Bianka Katon and stylist Leanne Cunningham immediately wanted to help. Almost at once they set about brainstorming ideas on how they could get involved to raise money for the cause, whilst also helping local charities the Dawn Centre and the Leicester Y too. The duo wanted to ensure that all in the area less fortunate than themselves could still enjoy a lovely Christmas despite falling on hard times. They decided to hold a jumble sale in their city centre branch on Granby Street, Leicester.

George’s has supported their local Food Bank every year at Christmas but this year decided to make more of an impact with a larger gesture to help several charities in one event. Leanne had heard of the work that Leicester Link do to get people who have lost their homes back on their feet in times of hardship and together the duo devised a plan to gather clothes and bric-a-brac in the salon. Stylists, clients and members of the public alike donated items to be sold, in an effort to make money for these amazing charities.

On the day, the event saw hundreds of people passing through the salon doors in order to donate funds and pick-up a Christmas bargain from the stylish array of garments and games that the salon had to offer. From Burberry to Diesel, River Island to Firetrap, the salon had some beautiful items on sale, all at the bargain price of £1.

Bianka was overwhelmed with the success of the event:

“Every year we like to think of those less fortunate than ourselves here at George’s and really kick-start the Christmas spirit. In past years we have worked with the Leicester Food Bank gathering parcels and hampers to send to those who don’t have enough money to enjoy the same Christmas dinner that we take for granted. This year, we wanted to help on a bigger scale and a jumble sale seemed like the perfect answer to get people in off the street and dig deep with some great brands on offer.”

The event was a massive success and the team’s efforts raised £400 for charities Leicester Link, Leicester Y and the Dawn Centre. All of the leftover clothes have also been bagged-up and donated to the Dawn Centre, with more expensive items being auctioned on eBay this month to raise more funds for these amazing charities.

Leanne was really happy with their efforts:

“We’ve worked really closely with Leicester Link to make the jumble sale a success. For all of us at George’s, it’s so important for everyone in the community to have a lovely Christmas. Everyone deserves to enjoy this magical time of year and the fantastic work that Leicester Link do needs to be more widely recognised. They buy uniforms for children whose parents cannot afford them, help pay for central heating and even give high street vouchers to less of families so that they can have a little something underneath their Christmas tree. People’s generosity has been phenomenal and Leicester Link have been brilliant in helping to publicise our event too, sending out an email to thousands of people on their database. We’d like to thank them for their support, everyone in the salon and our clients who have helped out, donated and even attended the event. It means so much that everyone has the opportunity to have a lovely Christmas this year and we hope that the money raised can really make a difference to someone.”
