Plant Culture Bursts into Bloom

The University of Leicester’s Attenborough Arts Centre summer exhibition ‘Plant Culture: Selected from the Arts Council Collection’ celebrated a fabulously floral opening night on Friday 22nd July and is now running until 25th September in Leicester.

Attending the opening were featured artists John Newling and Annie Descôteaux, alongside special guest Nick Hamilton, of Barnsdale Gardens, son of BBC Gardener’s World legend Geoff Hamilton.

The exhibition, which is free to attend, focuses on the special relationship between humans and plants with selected works from the British Arts Council. It is the first time that these pieces – a mix of contemporary sculpture, installation, photography and illustration– are being shown together in the Midlands.

Other featured artists include Turner Prize winners Gilbert & George and Simon Staling, as well as a live installation by sustainable artist Louis Weinberger.

The exhibition is taking place in Attenborough Arts Centre’s new gallery, which was funded by Arts Council England and more than 1,000 public donations through the Breaking Barriers appeal. Supporters included University of Leicester alumni, as well as local philanthropists who support Sir Richard Attenborough’s vision to create a welcoming and inclusive space for everyone to engage with the arts.

To accompany the exhibition, the centre will be delivering free drop-in family workshops focusing on art and nature every Saturday, 1pm – 3pm from 23rd July until 24th September.

Attendance is free and gallery opening hours are Monday - Saturday, 10am - 5pm and Sunday 12 - 4pm
