Propeller return to Coventry with Shakespeare's Twelfth Night
Internationally acclaimed all-male Shakespeare company, Propeller, return to Coventry’s Belgrade Theatre with their adaptation of Twelfth Night on the Main Stage from Thurs 8 to Sat 10 Nov.
Led by founder and Artistic Director Edward Hall, Propeller returns to the Belgrade following their highly praised performances of Richard III, The Comedy of Errors, Henry V and The Winter’s Tale.
One of Shakespeare’s best loved comedies of love and confusion, Twelfth Night tells a twisted tale of mistaken identity, transformation and deception. With a man playing a girl disguised as a boy, illusion and reality are almost indistinguishable on Propeller’s island of Illyria.
Dark and delightful, the play asks ‘What happens when you fall in love with the wrong person?’ and the answer is both beautiful and bittersweet.
"Visceral, intelligent and ironclad theatre, this isn’t just Shakespeare – this is rock and roll." - ***** - Daily Express
Edward Hall is also the Artistic Director of Hampstead Theatre and an artistic associate of the National Theatre, the Old Vic, and The Watermill Theatre, Newbury. Commenting on Propeller he said, “We want to rediscover Shakespeare simply by doing the plays as we believe they should be done: with great clarity, speed and full of as much imagination in the staging as possible.”
"I’ve decided never to miss another Propeller show again." **** - The Times
Propeller is an all-male Shakespeare company, so just as it was in Shakespeare’s day the action in Twelfth Night will be played out by an ensemble cast of all male actors.
The company is renowned for mixing a rigorous approach to the text with a modern physical aesthetic and they have been influenced by mask work, animation and both classic and modern film and music from all ages.
