GREASE - Market Harborough Musical Theatre 9-12 April Welland Park Academy Theatre
Made famous by the film starring John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John the stage version of this 1950’s classic is equally as lively and nostalgic. Easily confused with High School Musical, sharing the lives, loves, anxieties and friendships of the students at Rydell High this show still has a freshness that deserves being aired again and again. Bourne witness by the popularity of the professional touring production and West End revivals.
Professional careers have been launched by appearances in Grease not least John Travolta, Paul Nicholas and Richard Gere playing Danny Zuko the leader of the Burger Palace Boys commonly known as the T-Birds. Olivia Newton-John and Elaine Paige have both starred as Sandy, Danny’s love interest and Su Pollard and Tracey Ullman both appeared in the 1979 London revival.
Grease doesn’t have a message. It gives a flavour of being a teenager in the 50’s when rock’n’roll and putting grease on your hair were the most important things in life and for sheer exuberance it takes a lot of beating. Remembrances- yes and, maybe for some of us, wishing things were that simple again but audiences of all ages are guaranteed a brilliant night out with Sandy, the Pink Ladies and the boys they hook up with.
Nostalgia hits with this group are extremely popular. Their last production “Step Inside Love” a compilation of 60’s songs played to full houses following a successful run of “Our House” the 1980’s Madness show.
