Alastair Leake from The Allerton Project: “There is a lot to celebrate about British farming and food – so do come and join us on Open Farm Sunday and find out more! Our team from Allerton and Oxey Farm are really looking forward to welcoming everyone and showing them around the farm.
During your visit to our farms you will discover how we grow wheat/oats/barley that are used in Kellogs and Jordans breakfast cereals, flour, biscuits and beer. Come and meet our herd of South Devon beef suckler cows, our pigs and our Leicester Longwool and South Down sheep….. we’ve even got an alpaca! You can view the equipment we use on the farm. There’s local produce for sale, a spinning demonstration, a local artist and a children’s activity area and if you want more you can get up close to a real fire engine.
You can also take a walk through our parkland and our Leicestershire apple orchard which we planted to support our local heritage. We have tractor and trailer rides through the farm to see our cattle, ancient woodland, bean and oat crops and much more. Both the walk and trailer ride involve a kids quiz or a pollinator survey to keep them entertained on route. The Loddington WI will also be serving refreshments and lunch at our award winning eco-visitors centre.
Annabel Shackleton, Open Farm Sunday manager said: “Open Farm Sunday is a great opportunity for everyone to get out into the countryside and visit a farm. It is vital that we support our farmers and understand more about the work they do, and find out for yourself how your food is produced and what it takes to look after the countryside. Hundreds of farms across the country will be opening their gates on the 8th June to celebrate British farming and food; each farm plans their own unique event and many will include a host of activities from nature walks to farm tours. So visitors will get a fascinating insight into aspects of the countryside that they wouldn’t normally see.”
This year’s event will be the ninth Open Farm Sunday. For up-to-date campaign information and to let us know about your time on the farm, follow us on Twitter - twitter.com/openfarmsunday or find us on Facebook – facebook.com/LEAFopenfarmsunday
