An engagement or betrothal, is a promise to wed, and also the period of time between a marriage proposal and a marriage. During this period, a couple is said to be betrothed, ‘intended’, affianced, engaged to be married, or simply engaged.
The contemporary wedding cake has grown out of several different ethnic traditions. One of the first traditions began in Ancient Rome where unsweetened barley bread was broken over the bride’s head by the groom to bring good fortune to the couple and to symbolise the grooms dominance over her.
