Church Langton Residents Triumphant in Helping to Save The Langton Arms

The Langton Arms

The Langton Arms is the only pub in the village of Church Langton, Market Harborough and as such it has been treasured by the local community as a place to meet with friends and family over a lunch, dinner or simply drinks for many years.

When Church Langton residents discovered that the pub’s then owner, Greene King Brewery Plc, was selling the pub in the summer of 2015, there was a great deal of concern over the real possibility that the pub could be purchased for development, which would mean that the village would lose a vital community site.

In an attempt to prevent The Langton Arms from being sold for redevelopment, Church Langton residents organised themselves into a group called ‘The Langtons Community Enterprise Group’ and took steps to register the pub as an asset of community interest with the Parish Council, with a view to buying the site should the need have arisen. The group considered its options for funding a bid to purchase and run the pub itself, but then they discovered that one of the intended bidders was Little Britain Pub Company, and, having met with the directors and learned of their plans for the pub, the group decided to abandon its own bid and instead threw its weight behind The Little Britain Pub Company’s bid, which subsequently was successful.

Commenting on behalf of The Langton’s Community Enterprise Group, leader Anthony Lawton says:

“Over 60 Church and East Langton residents campaigned to secure a thriving future for our Church Langton pub, helped by The Plunkett Foundation. Running the pub ourselves really would have been a last resort — so we are delighted that The Little Britain Pub Company now owns it. We tried their other excellent venues and loved them. We will all be enthusiastic customers and are relieved not to be publicans!”

Speaking as the new owner of The Langton Arms and on behalf of The Little Britain Pub Company, Ben Moore says:

“It is incredibly humbling and encouraging that The Langton’s Community Enterprise Group shares our vision for the Langton Arms. We are really grateful for the support we received from them and our solicitors, Bray & Bray, in winning the bid and completing the purchase. The enthusiasm, community spirit and dedication from both have demonstrated that we made the perfect choice when expanding The Little Britain Pub Company into Church Langton. It is obviously a village where our ethos of ‘If the village had a heart, it would be the pub!’ will be appreciated by local residents.

All of Little Britain Pub Co’s pubs are renowned for being ‘Proper Pubs’ with real food, real drinks and where muddy boots and dogs are always welcome. I’m really pleased that The Langton Arms will stay open for local residents and will become the 5th Little Britain Pub Company pub.”

Bray & Bray Commercial Property Solicitor Catherine North, who acted for Little Britain Pub Company on the purchase comments:

“It has been an absolute pleasure working with Ben to secure the future of Church Langton’s village pub. Many of us live locally, including one solicitor in Church Langton, and we cannot wait to join the residents in visiting The Langton Arms for some excellent food and drinks, enjoyed within a great countryside village atmosphere.”
